Segment No. 138 -- Mk. 12:41-44; Lk. 21:1-4

Title:  The Widow's Two Mites

Mk. 12:41 Now Yeshua sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much.
Lk. 21:1  Then He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury.

The space where the thirteen trumpets were placed was along the wall and columns within the Women’s Courts. Reference to these can be found in the Mishnah.  They were called Korban Chests.  It was in the Women’s Court at the places where the thirteen trumpets were placed that Yeshua taught on that memorable Feast of Trumpets. Since each trumpet made a different sound as various coins were deposited, the Lord distinguished the contributions of the rich who cast in of their abundance from that of the poor widow who of her penury had given all the living that she had.  The Talmud says, “It does not matter if the offering be much or little as long as the heart is directed toward Heaven.”

According to Josephus, this treasury chamber seems to have been the very same in which our Messiah, and where the people offered their charity money for the repairs or other upkeep of the temple.

Mk. 12:42  Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans.
Lk. 12:12  And He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites.

Quadrans was a Roman monetary unit worth only a few cents.

Mk. 12:43  So He called His disciples to Him and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, that poor widow has put in more than all these who have give to the treasury.”
Lk. 12:3  So He said, “Truly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all.”

Mk. 12:44  “For they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.”
Lk. 12:4   “For all these out of their abundance have put in offerings to God, but she out of her poverty has put in all the livelihood that she had!”
