Lk. 22:54b And Peter followed at a distance.
Jn. 18:15 And Simon Peter followed Yeshua, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the High Priest, and went with Yeshua into the courtyard of the High Priest.
Because this disciple was known to the High Priest, he went with Yeshua into the High Priest’s courtyard. This verse alone is enough proof that the anonymous “Dear Disciple,” author of the Gospel of John, could not have been John the brother of James, because the Galilean fisherman was by no means a priest, and by no means of such stature that the Jewish High Priest would have known him personally. But the other John, John the Priest, assuming that he was wealthy enough to own a home in Jerusalem’s Upper City, could certainly have been an acquaintance of the High Priest.
Jn. 18:16 But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the High Priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in.
Notice here that Peter had to wait at the gate and couldn’t get in until John the Priest came to the gatekeeper and spoke for him so he could get in. This eyewitness testimony sets the stage for Peter’s famous denial of Yeshua.
Mt. 26:69a Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him,
Mk. 14:66 Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the High Priest came,
Lk. 22:55 Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.
Jn. 18:18 And the servants and officers who made the fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.
Mt. 26:69b Saying, “You also were with Yeshua of Galilee.”
Mk. 14:67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Yeshua of Nazareth.”
Lk. 22:56 And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”
Jn. 18:17a Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this man’s disciple’ are you,”
Mt. 26:70 But he denied I before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying,”
Mk. 14:68a But he denied it, saying, I neither know or understand what you are saying.”
Lk. 22:57 But he denied him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”
Jn. 18:17b He said, “I am not.”
Mt. 26:71a And when he had gone out of the gateway,
Mk. 14:68b And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed.
Mt. 26:71b Another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This fellow also was with Yeshua of Nazareth.”
Mk. 14:69 And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.”
Lk. 22:58a And after a little while another saw him and said, “You are also one of them.”
Jn. 18:25a Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. Therefore they said to him, You are not also one of His disciples, are you?”
Mt. 26:72 But again, he denied with an oath, “I do not know the Man.”
Mk. 14:70a But he denied it again.
Lk. 22:58b But Peter said, “Man, I am not.”
Jn. 18:25b He denied it and said, “I am not.”
Jn. 18:26 One of the servants of the High Priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?”
Mt. 26:73 And after a while those who stood by came to him and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them, because your speech betrays you.”
Mk. 14:70b And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.”
Lk. 22:59 Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean.”
Mt. 26:74a Then he began to curse and swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!”
Mk. 14:71 But he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak.”
Lk. 22:60a But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!”
Jn. 18:27a Peter then denied again.
Mt. 26:74b And immediately a cock crowed.
Mk. 14:72a And a second time the rooster crowed.
Lk. 22:60b And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
Jn. 18:27b And immediately a rooster crowed.
Mt. 26:75a And Peter remembered the words of Yeshua who had said to him, ”Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”
Mk. 14:72b And Peter called to mind the word that Yeshua had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”
Lk. 22:61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”
Matthew speaks only in general terms as far as the words Yeshua spoke to Peter about his denial and the cock crowing, but Mark gives a very specific description. Luke adds a very unusual statement: “And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Evidently Yeshua was standing in a location where He could look into the courtyard and could see Peter while His trial was going on.
Mt. 26:75b Then he went out and wept bitterly.
Mk. 14:72c And when he thought about it, he wept.
Lk. 22:62 Then Peter went out and wept bitterly.
