Mt. 28:11 Now while they were going, behold, some of the guards came into the city and reported to the chief priests all the things that had happened..
Mt. 28:12 When they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers.
Mt. 28:13 Saying, “Tell them, “His disciples came at night and sole Him away while we slept.”
Mt. 28:14 “And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will appease Him and make you secure.”.
Mt. 28:15 So they took the money and did as they were instructed, and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day..
These are part of the Roman guards that guarded the tomb. They know what happened to a guard that fails to stop the breaking of a Roman seal, and that is punishable by execution. So rather than going to Pilate with their confession they come to the Jewish leaders. They tell the chief priests of the things hat had come to pass. So now we have a new conspiracy formulated by the Sadducees. They come up with the stolen body theory which has been repeated through the centuries.
There are two possible options to this “stolen body theory.” First, if the body was stolen by the disciples, It seems almost impossible to believe that they would be willing to die a terrible death for something they knew was a lie. Eleven of the disciples died a martyr’s death, often cruelly. In every case prior to their deaths, they were given the option to give up their preaching or not. It doesn’t make sense then, that His body was stolen by His friends, The second option is that the body was stolen by His enemies. And that is when he apostles began preaching the resurrection of Yeshua, and their enemies tried to put a stop to it. The easiest way to put a stop to it would be to produce the body. The fact that they were not able to produce a body shows that His enemies were not guilty of stealing the body either.
