Segment No. 181 -- Mt. 28:16-20; Mk. 16:15-18; I Corin. 15:6

Title:  Yeshua Appears to the Five Hundred -- The Great Commission

M. 28:16  Then the eleven disciples went away to Galilee, to the mountain which Yeshua had appointed for them.
Mt. 28:17  And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.
Mt. 28:18  Then Yeshua came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in Heaven and on earth.”

Mt. 28:19   “Therefore, baptizing hem in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,”
Mk. 16:15  And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature.”

Mt. 28:20  “Teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”  Amen.

The Greek word used for age is #2820 “aion,” (Strong’s #165) which means specifically the Jewish Messianic period.  It does not mean the end of the world as in the planet earth.  The Jewish Messianic Age ended in 70 C.E. with the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple.

As an outgrowth of Judaism, the New Testament supports the idea that both learning and teachings should be the concern of every Christian.  The Great Commission is a command incumbent upon the entire church.  It includes both a responsibility – to “Make disciples of all nations – and a method – “teaching them” – to obey all that the Lord commanded.  In this passage, the term “make disciples” is grammatically an imperative, stressing the obligation entailed. The centrality of learning to New Testament thought is also borne out by the fact that the noun “matbetes,” or “disciple occurs nearly 250 times.

Mk.16:16   "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned."
Mk. 16:17  "And these signs will follow those who believe; in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;"
Mk. 16:18   “They will take up serpents, and if they drink anything deadly, it will by drink anything by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

I Corin. 15:6  After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remains to their presents, but some have fallen asleep.

The meaning of this last verse simply is that most of those who witnesses the Lord’s words were still alive at the time of Paul’s writings..  Those last witnesses were still available to share their testimonies as to the words of Yeshua for some time.  However, Yeshua never intended for His words to be used as a way of tempting God the way the snake handlers of today use them.  Picking up deadly serpents and drinking poison trying to intentionally tempt the Lord violates the very spirit and intent of the Word of God and does violence to the Lord’s teachings.
