Segment No. 153 -- Mt. 26:47-56; Mk. 14:43-52; Lk. 22:47-53; Jn. 18:2-11

Title:  The Arrest of Yeshua

Jn. 18:2  And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Yeshua often met there with His disciples.

M. 26:47  And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people.
Mk. 14:43  And immediately, while He was sill speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the elders.
Lk. 22:47  And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Yeshua to kiss Him.
Jn. 18:3  Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

Violation No. 3: Yeshua’s arrest was planned and carried out at night to conceal evil.
The arrest of Yeshua was set in motion by the chief priests bribing Judas to take them to Yeshua during the night.  However, the Law stated that all activity of a capital trial was to be conducted only during the daytime.  “In capital cases they hold the trial by day and they must come to a decision during the daytime.”

Mt. 26:48  Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “Whoever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.”
Mk. 14:44  Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One, take Him and lead Him away safely.”

Jn. 18:4  Yeshua therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, ”Whom are you seeking?”
Jn. 18:5  They answered Him, Yeshua of Nazareth.”  Yeshua said to them, “I am He.”  And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them.
Jn. 18:6  Then – when He said to them, “I am He,” – they drew back and fell to the ground.

Yeshua went forth boldly to meet this great multitude that had come to arrest Him.  He asked the leaders, “Whom do you seek?”  When they replied “Yeshua of Nazareth,” He then showed them that He was in total control of the situation.  By saying, “I am” Yeshua was not merely identifying Himself; He was also claiming deity.  He proof of His power was demonstrated when He said “I am,” for the entire arresting party was forced to the ground at His words.  This showed that He was in command of he situation, and the arrest would only occur because Yeshua was willing to be arrested.  According to 18:5, Judas was also with the multitude; so he too was forced to the ground.

Jn. 18:7  Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?”   And they said, “Yeshua of Nazareth.”
Jn/ 18:8   Yeshua answered, “I have told you that I am He.  Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way.”
Jn. 18:9  That the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, “Of those whom You gave
Me I have lost none.”

Mt. 26:49   Then immediately he wen up to Yeshua and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!,” and kissed Him.
Mk. 14:45  Ad as soon as He had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.”

Mt. 26:50a  And Yeshua said to him, “Friend, why have you come?”
Lk. 22:48  But Yeshua said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?

M. 26:50b  Then they came and laid hands on Yeshua and took Him.
Mk. 14:46  Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him.

Lk. 22:49  When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”

Mt. 26:51  And suddenly, one of those who were with Yeshua stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the High Priest and cut off his ear.
Mk. 14:47  And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the High Priest and cut off his ear.
Lk. 22:50  And one of them struck the servant of the High Priest and cut off his right ear.
Jn. 18:10   Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the High Priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear.  The servant’s name was Malchus.

According to the Mosaic Law, no man with any kind of a defect could serve in the Temple. The servant of the High Priest would be automatically disqualified because of his missing ear. Josephus records an incident where a person was deliberately marred so that they could not serve as High Priest.  “But being afraid that Hyrcanus, who was under guard of the Parthians, might have his kingdom restored to him by the multitude, he cut off his ears, and thereby took care that the high priesthood should never come to him any more, because he was maimed, while the law required that this dignity should belong to none but such as had all their members entire.”

Mt. 26:52  Then Yeshua said to him, “Put your sword in its place, for all who take up the sword will perish by the sword.”
Jn. 18:11  Then Yeshua said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath.  Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?”

In addition to what John recorded, Matthew stated that the rebuke included the admonition that all who live by the sword will die by the sword.  While the sword may be used for personal defense, it cannot be used for the defense of the faith.  There can be no allowance for spreading the faith by means of the sword. Furthermore, spiritual battle must be fought by spiritual means.  Finally, Yeshua said that the arrest was necessary for the purpose of fulfilling all prophecy.

Lk. 22:51  But Yeshua answered and said, “”permit even this “ And He touched his ear and healed him.

Mt. 26:53  “Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?”
Mt. 26:54  “How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?”

Mt. 26:55a  In that hour Yeshua said to the multitudes, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me?”
Mk. 14:48  Then Yeshua answered and said to them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs, to take Me>”
Lk. 22:52  Then Yeshua said to the chief priests, captains of the Temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs?”

Mt. 26:26b  “I sat daily with you, teaching in the Temple, and you did not seize Me.”
Mk. 14:49a  “I was daily with you in the Temple teaching, and you did not take Me.”
Lk. 22:53  “When I was with you daily in the Temple, you did not try to seize Me.  But this is your hour, and the hour of darkness.”

Mt. 26:56a  “But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.”
Mk. 14:49b  “But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”

Mt. 26:56b  Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.
Mk. 14:50  Then they all forsook Him and fled.

Mk. 14:51  Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body.  And the young men laid hold of him.

This young man was one of the multitude from the Temple.  Probably the reason for the linen cloth is that it was a bed covering.  He had been hurriedly awakened at home and didn’t have time to dress properly.  He was not with the disciples when they went out to the Garden of Gethsemane.
