Segment No. 164 -- Mt. 27:35-44; Mk. 15:24-32; Lk. 23:34-43; Jn. 19:18-27

Title:  The First Three Hours on the Cross

Fulfilled Prophecy:  He prays for His enemies (Psalm 100:4).  
Luke 23:34a  Then Yeshua said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

Some of the later manuscripts have this verse deleted because evidently the scribes didn’t want to show that Yeshua was praying for God to forgive the Jews for crucifying Him.  Ani-Semitism was very strong in the beginning days and is still very much present in the church today.

Mt. 27:35a  Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots.
Mk. 15:24  And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.
Lk. 23:34b  And they divided His garments and cast lots.
Jn. 19:23  Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Yeshua, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic.  Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece.  

Fulfille Prophecy:  The soldiers cast lots for His clothes (Psalm 22:18).
Mt. 27:35b  That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, “They divided My garments among them, and My clothing they cast lots.”
Jn. 19:24  They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which says, “They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.”  Therefore the soldiers did these things.

Mt. 27:36  Sitting down, they kept watch over Him.
Lk. 23:35a  And the people stood looking on.

Mk. 15:25  Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.

This would make it about 9:00 a.m. in the morning.

Mt. 27:37  And they put over His head the accusation written against Him: THIS IS YESHUA, KING OF THE JEWS.
Mk. 15:26  And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Jn. 19:19  Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross.  And the writing was : YESHUA OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS..

Jn. 19:20  Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Yeshua was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

Did Yeshua speak Hebrew, or Aramaic?  I guess there will always be this controversy to some extent But we still have to ask this question, .”if he common language of the people was Aramaic, why did Pilate have the sign written for all to see in Hebrew?  If the people mainly spoke Aramaic, why then wouldn’t Pilate have the sign written in Aramaic?  This is just one of the many evidences that the common language of the people in Yeshua’s day was Hebrew, with probably a little Aramaic and Greek mixed in.  But Hebrew was considered to be a holy language, and especially in the synagogue and schools only Hebrew was spoken.

Jn. 19:21  Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘the King of the Jews,’ but ‘He said, “I am the king of the Jews.”’”
Jn. 19:22  Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

Under normal circumstances what is erected over the head of the crucified one, the superscription, was the crime for which he was being crucified.  But Pilate’s wording of it doesn’t sound like an accusation but sound like a title.  The Jewish leaders recognize it and they request Pilate to change the wording, but he refuses.  This is his own personal revenge upon the Jewish leaders for forcing his hand on the issue, and making him do something he did not wish to do. 

Mt. 27:38  Then the two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left.
Mk. 15:27  With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left.
Lk. 23:33b  There they crucified Him, and the criminals , one on the right hand ad the other on the left.
Jn. 19:18  Where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Yeshua in the center.

Fulfilled Prophecy:  He would be crucified with sinners (Isaiah 53:12).
Mk. 15:28  So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors.”

Fulfilled Prophecy:  Those who passed by shook their heads at Him (Psalm 22:7).
Mt. 27:39  And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads.
Mk. 15:29a  And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads.

Mt. 27:40a  And saying, “You who destroy the Temple and build it in three days,”
Mk. 15:29b  And saying, “Aha!  You who destroy the Temple and build it in three days,”

Mt. 27:40b  “Save Yourself!  If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
Mk. 15:30  “Save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”

Mt. 27:41  Likewise the chief priests, also mocking with the scribes and the elders, said,
Mk. 15:31a  Likewise the chief priests also, together with the elders, mocked and said among themselves,
Lk. 23:35b  But even the rulers with them sneered, saying,

Mt. 27:42a  “He saved others; Himself He cannot save.”
Mk. 15:31b  “He saved others; Himself He cannot save.”
Lk. 23:35c  “He saved others, let Him save Himself if He is the Messiah, the Chosen of God.”

Fulfilled Prophecy:  He was mocked and insulted (Psalm 22:6-8).
Mt. 27:42b  “If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him.”
Mk. 15:32a  “Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.”

Mt. 27:43  “He trusted in God, let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, “I am the Son of God.”

Lk. 23:36  And the soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him wine.
Lk. 23:37  And saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!”

Mt. 27:44   Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.
Mk. 15:32b  And those who were crucified with Him revile Him.
Lk. 23:39  Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Messiah, save Yourself and us.”

Lk. 23:40  But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?”
Lk. 23:41  “And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.”
Lk. 23:42  Then he said to Yeshua, Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”
Lk. 23:43  And Yeshua said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

Jn. 19:25  Now there stood by the cross of Yeshua His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clophas, and Mary Magdalene.
Jn. 1926  When Yeshua therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son.”
Jn. 19:27  Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.”  And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.


Here we have sort of an unusual situation, and possibly further proof that a schism had developed in Yeshua’s family some time before.  According to Jewish custom it was the responsibility of the oldest son to take care of the mother, not someone outside of the family. No where in the Scriptures does it even say that Yeshua’s brothers were present at His crucifixion.  We know that James and Jude became believers after His resurrection.  But, right now, they are no where to be found.  According to these last two verses, the mother of Yeshua has now been “adopted” by the “disciple whom Yeshua loved,” John the Priest.  Evidently Yeshua wanted to make sure that His mother would be well taken care of by someone who had the financial ability to do it.  John the Priest had demonstrated his loyalty to take on such a very important task for the Lord.  Yeshua’s brothers had not.
