Segment No. 171 -- Mt. 28:5-8; Mk. 16:2-8; Lk. 24:1-8; Jn. 20:1

Title:  The Women Meet the Angels at the Tomb

Mk. 16:2  Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
Lk. 24:1  Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.
Jn. 20:1a  On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to see the tomb early, while it was still dark,

Mk. 16:3  And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?”

Mk. 16:4  But when they looked up, they saw hat the sone had been rolled away, for it was very large.
Lk. 24:2  But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
Jn. 20:1b  And saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

Lk. 24:3  Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Yeshua.

Mk. 16:5  And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on th right side; and they were alarmed.
Lk. 24:4  And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood about them in shining garments..

Here we have another contradiction, but it really makes very little difference.  Mark indicates that there was one angel in the tomb.  Luke says that there was two.  The important point is that there was an angelic presence there.

Mt. 28:5  But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Yeshua who was crucified.”
Lk. 24:5  Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?”

Mt. 28:6  “He is not here; for He is risen, as He said.  Come, see the place where the Lord lay.”
Mk. 16:6a  But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed.  You seek Yeshua of Nazareth, who was crucified.   He is risen!  He is not here.  See the place where they laid Him.”
Lk. 26:6  “He is not here, but is risen!  Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee?”

Lk. 26:7  “Saying, The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful man, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.”
Lk. 26:8  And they remembered His words.

Mt. 28:7  “And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee, therefore you will see Him.  Behold, I have told you.”
Mk. 16:7   Go and tell His disciples – and Peter – that He is going before you into Galilee; therefore you will see Him, as He has said to you.”

Mt. 28:8  So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring to His disciples the word.
Mk. 16:8  And they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed.  And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Mark 16:9-20  Are considered by most textual critics as not original Scripture.  According to Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Vaticanus, Codex Alexdraninus, Codices Syriacus, Bobiensis and two other of the oldest Georgian translations, the Gospel of Mark originally ended at chapter 16, verse 8.  The evidence that these verses (9-20) were not original to Mark is similar in kind to that for the passage about the woman taken in adultery.  The verses are absent from our two oldest and best manuscripts along with other important witnesses.  The writing style varies from what we find elsewhere n Mark.  The transition between this passage and the one preceding it is hard to understand.  And there are a large number of words and phrases in he passage that are not found elsewhere in Mark.  In short, the evidence is sufficient to convince nearly all textual critics that these verses are a later addition to Mark.
