Segment No. 173 -- Mk. 16:9-11; Jn. 20:11-18

Title:  Yeshua Appears to Mary Magdadelene

Mk. 16:9  Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons (Lk. 8:2).

Jn. 20:11  But Mary stood outside of the tomb, weeping, and as she wept, she stooped down and looked into the tomb.
Jn. 20:12  And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Yeshua had lain.
Jn. 20:13  Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”  She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do no know where they have laid Him.”
Jn. 20:14  Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Yeshua standing there, and  did not know that it was Yeshua.
Jn. 20:15  Yeshua said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”  Whom are you seeking?” She, supposing Him to be a gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
Jn. 20:16  Yeshua said to her, “Mary!”  She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni” (which is to say, “Teacher”).
Jn. 20:17  Yeshua said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father, but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and to your God..’”

Hebrews 9:11-15 gives the reason for the reason for ascending into Heaven.  He is our High Priest that ascended into the Heavenly Holy of Holies with His own blood to make atonement once and for all.  That is what this verse is talking about.

Mk. 16:10  She went and old those who had ben with Him, as they mourned and wept.
Jn. 20:18   Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that He had spoken these things  to her.

Mk. 16:11  And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.

The thing to note here is that Yeshua’s first appearance is to a woman.  This is significant in the light of those who claim the resurrection account is a fabrication.  If this was a fabrication, it would be a Jewish fabrication and women under Jewish law cannot serve as witnesses. If this was a fabrication, they would have made sure the first witnesses were men instead of women.

There is one other point that needs to be made here.  Mark 16:9-20 are not found in our best early Greek manuscripts (Codex SinaiticusCodex Vaticanus, and Codex Alexdraninus).  Most modern Bibles today either put these verses in brackets to set them apart or omit them altogether and add a footnote at the bottom of the last page of Mark's Gospel explaining their absence.
