Segment No. 179 -- John 20:26-31

Title:  Yeshua Appears to the Disciples Again With Thomas

Jn. 20:26  And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them.  Yeshua came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you.”
Jn. 20::27  Then He said to Thomas, ”Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side.  Do not be disbelieving, but believing.”
Jn. 20:28  And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and My God!”
Jn. 20:29  Yeshua said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed.  Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Jn. 20:30  And truly Yeshua did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book.
Jn. 20:31  But these are written that you may believe that Yeshua is the Messiah, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

If by some good fortune a person found in the first autograph of John’s Gospel, the discoverer would see that it ended with 20:31.  Clearly the last chapter (chapter 21) was appended at some later time.  It could have been added to the second draft prior to the second draft prior to a publication in its second edition, hat John actually produced several different versions of his Gospel.  Readers have long noted, for example, that chapter 21 appears to be a later add-on.  The Gospel certainly seems to come to an end in 20:30, 31 and the events of chapter 21 seem to be a kind of after thought, possibly added to fill out the stories of Yeshua’s resurrection appearances and to explain that when the “beloved disciple” responsible for narrating the traditions in the Gospel had died, this was not unforseen (21:21:, 23).
